Johne's Disease is a chronic, contagious enteritis characterized by persistent and progressive diarrhea, weight loss, debilitation, and eventually death. It is caused by a bacteria named Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis. It affects cattle, sheep, goats, llamas, camels, farmed deer, and other domestic, exotic, and wild ruminants. It also has been recognized in wild rabbits.
Minnesota dairy and beef producers are invited to participate in a voluntary control program for Johne’s Disease. The purpose of the voluntary program is to help producers eliminate the disease from their herds and prevent introduction of the disease from other sources.
To enroll in the program, contact the Board of Animal Health at 651-201-6824.
The Minnesota Board of Animal Health will no longer be able to reimburse private practice veterinarians for Johne’s Disease testing or risk assessments performed after December 28, 2007. Click here for more information.
