In response to the changing Avian Influenza (AI) situation locally, nationally and internationally, the Minnesota Board of Animal Health Minnesota Poultry Testing Laboratory (MPTL) has increased its AI surveillance.
Tests are conducted at the MPTL in Willmar as part of voluntary AI surveillance programs for commercial and non-commercial poultry flocks. The primary role of the MPTL is to support the poultry industry, with over 100,000 samples tested each for AI. Early detection is crucial in order to initiate control measures by the poultry industry and state.
The MPTL tests samples from processing plants, hatcheries, and flock owners enrolled in official surveillance programs. Test results are usually available within 24-48 hours. The first indication of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in poultry is sudden deaths, often without signs of illness. If you suspect HPAI, contact your veterinarian or the Board at 320-231-5170.
